BACKGROUND

This project began when the Student Support Team asked me for help with facilitating, coordinating, and designing a set of on-campus visuals that would raise awareness of key student services. Their aim was to have a physical presence—something visible and accessible to students passing through communal spaces. They wanted a “one-stop-shop” banner that clearly pointed students in the right direction for wellbeing, academic, and general support. At the same time, the Education Services Support Team (EST), who provide a wide range of services across the entire school, were keen to highlight what they offer— many of which students may not even realise are available to them.

My Role

My role was to bring both visions together and translate them into reusable, professional banner designs that could be used not only during Welcome Weeks, but throughout the academic year. The ultimate goal was to increase visibility, simplify access to support, and create a consistent visual presence on campus that students could trust and engage with.

Design Goals

Visual Design

To support the digital transition of the Purple Boxes initiative, I designed a clean and familiar interface that carried over the recognisable elements of the original paper-based system. The purple colour theme remained central to reinforce brand identity and build trust, while the layout was intentionally kept minimal to encourage student engagement across all devices.

Welcome Week

This roller banner was designed to support EECS students during Welcome Week by presenting essential information in a clear, accessible format. A high-quality campus image and vibrant “Welcome Week” title create immediate visual impact.

I introduced a reusable QR code placeholder, allowing the banner to stay relevant year after year by updating only the code.

The layout separates key content into digestible sections: advice and counselling, enrolment steps, FAQs, and contact details. Icons and colour-coded elements help guide the eye, while the design remains consistent with EECS and Queen Mary branding.

Careful attention was given to font hierarchy and spacing to ensure legibility from a distance, especially in busy areas like reception spaces. The result is a practical, welcoming, and futureproof resource for new students.

Mock-Up

Education Services Support Team

This roller banner was created to introduce students to the Education Services Team (EST) at EECS and clearly communicate the support available throughout their academic journey. The design uses a bold, structured layout to separate content into three main team areas: Student Support, Delivery & Assessment, and Programme Administration. At the top, a bright, geometric frame and high-quality campus image establish visual interest and familiarity.

The central “About Us” section explains the team’s purpose using a concise summary framed in a rounded, accessible shape that complements the banner’s visual flow. A trio of colour-coded pie charts breaks down the services offered by each sub-team, helping students quickly identify who to contact for specific queries. Icons and contact details are presented in a clean, consistent format, reinforced by location info where applicable.

The banner concludes with a Queen Mary–branded footer and a motivating strapline—“Supporting your Academic Journey”—tying together the tone of guidance, clarity, and approachability that shaped the design.
